About Us
Founded in 1987, Zen Hospice Project provides a spectrum of collaborative services that foster wisdom
and compassionate service in end-of-life care, including residential hospice care, volunteer caregiver
support, and public education. We are seen as a leading innovator in training, supporting, and retaining
volunteer caregivers. Each year, over 100 Zen Hospice volunteer caregivers provide an estimated 20,000
hours of practical, emotional and spiritual support to more than 150 individuals and their families as
they face death from cancer, AIDS, and other illnesses.
Our Approach to Caregiving
ZHP was founded on the principal that dying is much more than a medical event. It is a time for important
psychological, emotional and spiritual work and a time for transition. To a large extent the way we meet
change, loss & death is shaped by our habitual response to suffering and our relationship to ourselves,
to those we love, and to whatever way we perceive our place in the world.
The “Zen” part of our name reflects our approach of bringing mindfulness and compassion to
our programs. As the first and largest Buddhist hospice in America, we have a unique perspective to offer.
We support people’s capacity to be present and open to whatever is happening in the moment. We also explore
our own relationship to death and dying. Of course, these activities are not exclusive to Buddhist practice;
Buddhist practice simply forms the basis of our approach.
