ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Two-term Mayor of San Francisco, legendary Speaker of the California State Assembly, and widely regarded as one of the most influential African-American politicians of the late twentieth century, Willie L. Brown, Jr., has been at the center of California politics, government, and civic life for an astonishing four decades. His career spans the American Presidency from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush, and he’s worked with every California Governor from Pat Brown to Arnold Schwarzenegger. From health care to civil rights, education reform, tax policy, economic development, international trade, domestic partnerships, and affirmative action, he’s left his imprimatur on every aspect of politics and public policy in the Golden State. As Mayor of California’s most cosmopolitan city, he refurbished and rebuilt the nation’s busiest transit system, pioneered the use of bond measures to build affordable housing, created a model juvenile justice system, and paved the way for a second campus of the University of California, San Francisco. Today, he heads the Willie L. Brown, Jr., Institute on Politics and Public Service, where this acknowledged master of the art of politics shares his knowledge and skills with a new generation of California leaders.
Former Mayor Brown had an integral role in approving the regulations that allowed Zen Hospice Project to operate during the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s. We are honored to have him as our keynote speaker during the year that we re-open the Guest House, our residential hospice.

OUR ANNUAL FUNDRAISER
Speaker: the Honorable Willie L. Brown Jr.
Sunday, October 3, 2010, 6:00 pm
San Francisco War Memorial’s Green Room
401 Van Ness, San Francisco, CA
Tickets: $250
This is our signature fundraising event, now in its 14th year. Your participation will enable thousands of people each year to receive the kindness Zen Hospice Project strives to provide -- kindness that is passed along directly from person to person, kindness that ripples throughout the larger community.
Zen Hospice Project began with a commitment to fearless compassion. Our volunteers cared for the most vulnerable members of our society and no matter how much suffering they encountered, they did not turn away. Our mission is forged from that experience. Today we continue to meet that need, serving our community by bearing witness and providing care for people with loving-kindness.
This year’s event will bring everyone together in one location to enjoy a wonderful evening of fine food and enlivening conversation, and to support loving care for the terminally ill and their families. With a delectable menu from reknowned chef, Alfred Schilling of Schilling & Co. (see his bio below), and the ambiance of hundreds of Zen Hospice supporters together in the stately setting of the War Memorial, this promises to be an evening to remember!
