WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Professional caregivers who work with people, particularly people who are suffering, must contend with not only the normal stress or dissatisfaction of work, but also with the emotional and personal feelings for the suffering. The same is true for family caregivers. Professionals who are especially vulnerable to Compassion Fatigue (CF) include hospice workers, emergency care workers, counselors, mental health professionals, medical professionals, clergy, advocate volunteers, and human service workers. If you experience a great deal of stress in relation to caregiving and wonder if your own well being is negatively impacted - you may be suffering from CF.
It takes deliberate effort to remain balanced and inspired in the midst of intense challenges and repeated losses. This workshop explores the reality of Compassion Fatigue and provides tools on its assessment and self-care. Appropriate for all professional and family caregivers.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify and articulate the primary causes of compassion fatigue
- Recognize symptoms of compassion fatigue in self and supervisees
- Investigate personal values and experiences related to work, boundaries, & self care
- Develop skills and personal practices to prevent or reverse caregiver burnout
- Practice reflection methods that ease fatigue & restore balance to the provision of care
- Implement strategies for processing caregiver burnout as individuals and as teams
Note: This popular topic has been successfully taught in lecture and workshop formats at numerous organizational conferences and staff trainings. To inquire about offering one of these to your group, please contact Jennifer Block, Education Director, at jblock@zenhospice.org.
