Dallas Graham: A Children’s Advocate Experiences Mindful Caregiving
ZHP’s Foundations of Mindful Caregiving classes are designed for those who serve the chronically ill and dying. However, anyone who seeks a deeper connection with others will gain valuable experience and insight. Courses encourage dialogue about the end-of-life experience and ingrained assumptions and fears related to death. Through personal reflection, presentations, experiential activities, and discussion, participants gain knowledge, skills, and experience to enhance mindfulness, increase compassion and resiliency, and learn new ways to better support and serve patients, families, other caregivers, and themselves.
One former course participant is Dallas Graham, CEO and founder of publishing company The Red Fred Project. The company has an important goal – to publish 50 books authored by children suffering from critical illness in 50 states . To help himself and the company reach that goal, and to learn more about caregiving for his young authors, or “creatives” as he calls them, Dallas attended our Foundations of Mindful Caregiving course last fall.
Dallas recently shared his experience with the class and how he will use it professionally and personally. “Walking into the Guest House felt like home. I loved how the energy embodied peace and light. I try to practice a mindful way of living, and entering this space, I was immediately at ease with the positivity. At first, I was walking around gingerly because I felt the sacredness about this place, realizing who was here in the Guest House. And suddenly I was welcomed into this precious circle.”
“To walk in and understand that the staff and instructors already knew me, it was much more than I was expecting. Although I hadn’t met them, I felt like they knew me, they got me – especially on an emotional level. Within minutes, I was laughing and meeting amazing people, some of whom I am still in touch with to this day.”
“As a participant, I found the curriculum both elevating and grounding. Though I've seen death in my lifetime, with people I have known, Zen Hospice Project's mindful approach to dying illuminated something in me than I had previously not experienced nor imagined. I found the exercises, the sharing, and the practices simple and deep and expansive. Everything about how the information was shared by the facilitators allowed it to distill in my consciousness with such weight and lightness that I'm still referring to it today—months later. I have no doubt it will help me connect better with my “creatives”, to understand their vast experiences, and it will help me with caregiving—for them, for myself, and for everyone I encounter. The course was without question worth the investment."
ZHP Mindful Caregiving Education courses are open to everyone – including professional and informal caregivers, future caregivers, and anyone who is interested in the topic. For more information about how MCE courses will help you, or to enroll in an upcoming class, click here.
