Special Guest Mary Roach makes a wonderful case for why having a humor columnist, who also happens to be a meticulous science journalist, is the right person to explore the life of the body after the life has left. Drawing from her research for her two best-sellers, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife, Mary will, in her own words, help those "...who would like very much to believe in a soul and in an afterlife for it to hang around in, but who have trouble accepting these things on faith. It's a giggly, random, utterly earthbound assault on our most ponderous unanswered question." Joining her as a guide in this metaphysical journey is Paul Haller, Co-Abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center, and one of the founders of Zen Hospice Project. With over 30 years of Buddhist practice, and extensive experience integrating that practice with hospice, jail, and peace work, Paul is eminently qualified to address the spiritual side of the life/afterlife equation. The dinner's location, Garibaldis Oakland, is the essence of the kind of welcoming, sophisticated restaurant everyone wishes was in their own neighborhood.
