To our community:

We are saddened and disappointed to hear of the alleged abuse of 23 residents on two wards of Laguna Honda Hospital. We support Mayor London Breed and the Department of Public Health in their commitment to restoring trust among the patients and caregivers of the hospital through personnel changes, hospital staff retraining to prevent and report suspected abuse, and the institution of a 60-day turnaround plan.

Zen Hospice Project has had a presence at Laguna Honda for over thirty years. We are extremely proud of our volunteers who model kindness and presence in the face of intense suffering. We are confident that their presence on the South Three Palliative Care floor is supportive for not only the residents whom they serve but for family members and staff.

It is an honor to work with the skillful and caring staff-persons on South Three. Throughout our thirty-year presence, we have witnessed thousands of beautiful and compassionate interactions between staff-persons and residents. We look forward to opportunities to support the spread of mindful and compassionate caregiving throughout the hospital.  All persons deserve kindness and dignity at any stage of illness.

Sincerely,

Roy Remer
